For those of you who do not know, Headley Court is an excellent facility near Leatherhead which rehabilitates seriously injured servicemen and women. As you can imagine its workload has increased massively since 2003. SSAFA, the Soldier’s, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, a charity dedicated to the welfare of Service personnel and their families hope to set up a house in the nearby area for families to stay while they are visiting their injured loved ones. Similar schemes already exist at places like Great Ormond Street and St Katherine’s Hospice. Some of the drive for this scheme is coming from Pete and Sue Norton. You may remember reading about a Bomb Disposal Officer (ATO) who was awarded the George Cross after being seriously injured by a follow up bomb in Baghdad. Pete’s initial treatment was at the US facility near Ramstein in Germany. He had been working in support of the US. Sue and her children stayed in the Fisher House, run by the US for families of injured service personnel. The UK has no such facility for service families hence the project to buy a property in Gray’s Lane, Ashtead. Pete is now being treated at Headley Court.
Planning permission has been submitted to the Mole Valley District Council. Unfortunately the local residents have decided that this facility will lower the tone of their area. Many of their complaints smack of Nimbyism and old fashioned snobbery. An e-petition has been launched to get the PM’s backing to the campaign.

and I ask that you too sign this and tell anyone else who you feel would be interested too.
A campaign website has also been launched which gives more detail: www.36grayslane.co.uk (http://www.36grayslane.co.uk)
