Veterans of an RAF Squadron which served in Iraq during the First World
War and gained honours in the Battle of Britain joined current Squadron
members as their unit celebrated its 90th birthday this week.
72 Squadron, originally a Royal Flying Corps unit, formed on 2 July 1917 at
Netheravon in Wiltshire. Today it trains pilots at RAF Linton-on-Ouse near
York. To mark the latest anniversary, three of the Squadron's Tucanos also
flew an aerial salute over former airfields, including Biggin Hill in Kent.
72 Squadron was deployed to Basra in 1918 where it supported the Army
using Bristol M1c Bullets, Spad VIIs, Martinsyde G100s and SE5s. It
disbanded soon after the war but again formed in 1937 and served at RAF
Church Fenton near Tadcaster flying Gloster Gladiators on air defence and
convoy protection duties.
