London -- Wallace McIntosh, widely believed to be the British air force's most decorated gunner in World War II, has died at age 87, the Royal Air Force said.
McIntosh, who flew 55 sorties as a rear gunner and is believed to hold the record for most enemy kills, died Monday at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary of lung cancer, said RAF spokesman Michael Mulford.
His greatest achievement came during the D-Day advance when he was credited with downing three German fighter planes during a single mission aboard his Lancaster bomber on June 7, 1944.
McIntosh was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal and twice received the Distinguished Flying Cross - the RAF's most vaunted medal for bravery.--Associated Press
*p.s.--- I'm aware of the Victoria Cross and I thought it was also awarded to the RAF for bravery and I believe the VC is the highest British military decoration. Am I correct ? 03Fox2/1
