A WAR memorial in a Lothian park has been attacked by vandals who spray-painted the face of a soldier's statue bright pink. The culprits were today branded "mindless" after targeting the monument to those who perished in both world wars.

The vandals scaled about 20ft to paint over the face of the soldier, who stands with his head bowed in memory of fallen comrades.

Dozens of names are etched into the stone, listing residents from the Whitburn area who died in the conflicts. The attack was today condemned as a "disgrace". Three years ago the site was used to honour a soldier killed in the Iraq war who came from the town.

I don't have any words of my own I'm so angry. Enough is enough.
I want to educate these youngsters, make them fully understand how much they owe the soldiers we commemorate with all war memorials. I'm just not sure how. bou; box;

AAARRRRGGHHHH!!! this kind of BS boils my blood as well, we had some thudf**ker, piss on our National War Memorial and was caught on video, he was caught and got away with a tiny fine and a "Ah geez I'm Sorry" as a punishment, I was thinking more along the lines of him publicly scrubbing the whole Monument top to bottom, with a sign on him describing his crime.

........or Public Caning/Flogging

HIS CHOICE!!

..more than our proud men and women had in their sacrifice.

RANT OFF, BOB

That is BS! I wish people would actually have some respect and relize what those people did for them and us. Most of them gave there lifes for us and they DO NOT deserve to be treated like that. Where i live about three months ago a WW2 War vet was murdered by some punk robber. **** like that should not be tolerated. Sorry for the launguage but crap like that ticks me off.

The really sad thing is that these scumbags when they vandalise war memorials or paint swastikas on Jewish graves don't seem to realise that they have the freedom to commit these vile acts courtesy of the people whose memory they are defiling. Don't they understand that if it wasn't for the sacrifice of those poor young lads who went over the top on the Somme and the Toms and Cannucks and Yanks who fell in Normandy and other places, they wouldn't have the freedom to do this.

Our courts are far too soft on this walking scum and far more content with punishing pensioners who can't pay their council taxes or drivers doing 4mph over the speed limit.

Well said, mate. This sort of thing makes my blood boil too!

When mindless acts, like this desecration, are committed, it always brings a storm of protest. And as I read in one of the postings, the courts punishment acts like rubbing salt into the wound. Why should it be so? That is, the mindless act and the punishment,
I was born in March 1946, nine months and two days after my father was released from his POW camp. Born into a generation that became known as the Babyboomers, our parents, who had just survived the atrocity that had been WW2 and had lived through the great depression of the 1930's as children, were determined that we would get everything that they had been deprived of. A noble ideal indeed. Subsequent generations have followed this well meaning intent. And in doing so have repealed laws that held families and communities together. There was a time when people would look out for one another and they would obey the rule of law.
Nowadays, in the name of justice and freedom, we have disposable marriages, divorce on demand, we have disposable babies, abortion on demand, we have human rights, gay rights, this, that and the other rights. What we no longer have is a sense of discipline, pride or shame.
Let me take you back to the first paragraph and to the unanswered questions. Why the mindless act? My Sister-in-law decided that her upbringing had been far too strict. (no comment!) She therefore, allowed her kids to enjoy freedoms that she perceived as being denied to her, although she conveniently forgets that with freedom comes responsibility. Her children grew up. She had a son and four daughters. The son marries, has three kids, works hard and struggles to keep them afloat. All the daughters are single mums, although there is usually a current boyfriend in situ. The daughters have produced 18 children, all of whom are kept in a lifestyle to which you and I could never aspire, courtesy of the taxpayer. Some of the older children are now producing babies of their own. And so the cycle goes on. This way of living for them is the norm, as for the sacrifices that, so called strict Great grandfather made, well that's not even taught in school. Churchill? Isn't he that puppet dog in an insurance advert? So when my Sister-in-Law shuns her hard working son but is forever doting on her daughters and her Grandchildren, are they not going to see that there's nothing wrong with this lifestyle? A little war memorial desecration, that's just a good bit of sport, what are you getting so upset about?
The courts too, see the results of this 'fair' upbringing, and know that it's useless trying to impose a punishment that would mean something. Human rights again. So if you want to see our memorials left alone, if you want to see the elderly venerated and looked after with respect and dignity, if you want to see discipline returned to our way of life, then you must also expect to shoulder the responsibility that goes with that.
It is going to take a huge sea change to do it, I can't see it in my lifetime, but I hope for the sake of humanity it happens, before another Hitler rises to offer the hope that the misguided german people were so ready to believe in 1933.
Just a postscript: That Great-Grandfather is still alive, he's very frail, but enjoys reasonably good health. And what did he do in the war? Tailgun Charlie, that's what. Thirty-eight sorties, not a scratch on him.
My hero!
