the flag is Russian naval and is a jack or ensign. I sneaked around Vladivostok harbour (poss photos to come) and saw a few of these!

The second part of the question - it would be flown from the bow.

Droney, this is a good idea and if anybody else has any pic quizes please feel free to post them as droney has done. the only stipulation is that the image should not be so big that it forces the viewer to scroll from left to right on the page. If anybody is struggling with linking the image to the site, then send it to me and I will post it into the question for them.

Point to note: Do not link to images on other websites Thanks

Oh and droney, you made this question very easy for me which is why I didnt answer. The answer was in the image name ru-jack.gif hee hee.

give that man zofo 30 milcredits.

i tried to make it easy as it was the first picture question.

the flag itself, In 1992 the naval ensigns and flags of the Soviet Union were officially abolished, and the historic Andrew Flag was readopted as the naval ensign of the Russian Federation. The former tsarist jack and fortress flag was also readopted, but otherwise the new range of flags follows the previous Soviet pattern with the Cross of St. Andrew or the white-blue-red Russian tricolor replacing Soviet symbols. Exceptions are the Guards ensign and the honorary ensign for the cruiser Aurora, which continue to display the Soviet-era Guard Ribbon and Order of the Red Banner.
