Thanks chaps. The wingtip smoke is from special display pods called smokewinders, the rest is actually water vapour generated when the aircraft hits a certain speed/pressure barrier. That's the best of the type I've taken, but I've seen much better - one in particular of a USN F-14 Tomcat with only the front 15% of the fuselage emerging from it's own personal cloud.

On this occaision I just struck lucky.

Nope, That's not the pic he means. The one you're looking at is an F/A-18
Hornet, not the F-14 Tomcat. Same type of pic though.
