Stgw.57's are highly accurate and powerful assault rifles, Well made too and also capable of launching rifle grenades. Only drawback is they were too expensive and were only exported to Bolivia and Chile. Some were licence built in Italy by Berreta.

The one with the 'Banana' magazine looks like it takes the old 10mm round as used in the old Vetterli rifles? not sure.

The SIG 510(Stgw57) Rifles are state-of-the-art but were too expensive and therfore only exported to Bolivia and Chile, Some where licence built by Berreta.

Its a pure shame the SAS/Seals etc dont use them, Especially the 57 Commando carbine that would put an M4 to shame anyday.

The Stgw 57 uses the Roller-Locking Delayed Blowback operation as found in the CETME/H&K Rifles, Its muzzle is also capable of launching rifle grenades.

Sturmgewehr 57's are roumoured to be powerful and accurate as hell

There is another image of this rifle on a rack underneath an FG42, Could this be a SIG/Solothurn version of it?

No.

It is not under an FG 42, it is under a prototype Stgw 57.

it's a prototype based on the Stgw 57, in probably 7.62 x 39, or a Swiss intermediate cartridge.

It is on a rack of Swiss prototype weapons.

Step away from the computer, turnaround, and walk through the wooden thing behind you...

The SIG 510(Stgw57) Rifles are state-of-the-art
Please explain.

Its a pure shame the SAS/Seals etc dont use them,
No it's not, because the wpns are very heavy, as is the fodder.

While the Stgw 57 was eminently suitable for the Swiss military doctrine of the time, it is not designed to be fired in the standing or kneeling positions in contact, although it is just possible to do so on the range.

Especially the 57 Commando carbine that would put an M4 to shame anyday.
Once again logistics is the answer.
Weight, battle load and mag capacity all add up to indicate that it would be a pants carbine.
Incidentally, the 'carbines' are converted Stgws, not issue items.

Besides, as the Swiss issued their entire army with what are effectively LMGs, the ergonomics are right-hand operation only, hardly conducive to a CQB wpn.

Its muzzle is also capable of launching rifle grenades.

As are the majority of battle rifles, with or without a muzzle device.
However, with the current proliferation of UGLs there is very little call for them in most countries.

Yes they are, so much so that many competitors in the Swiss Service Rifle comps are buying them in preference to the issued Stgw 90.
