Looks to me that the image is stating that the RAF, at the time the photo was taken had recieved

X15 VC's
X 235 DSO's
X 905 MC's
X 287 DSC's

Do I read it correctly ?

Strange thing is I dont see one aircraft? could the RAF be some other military unit?, I only ask because I didnt think the RAF were formed during WW1 I thought it was the Royal Flying Corps ??

I have seen this image before, I think it is when the Royal Flying Crop was disbanded and became Royal Air Force 1st April 1918.

The letters are medals and the numbers are the total for each that were awarded to RFC personnel. As for the location, I will do some resarch.

Hi there Matzos,

I’ve just spent the last hour and half surfing the net and according to what I found The 15th Victoria Cross was awarded to the new found RAF on the 2nd
April 1918. The 16th was awarded on the 16th May 1918 and you can read this pilots action at http://www.constable.ca/mcleod.htm

Great link solthum

Another one of interest to me was William Leefe Robinson (July 14, 1895–December 31, 1918) who was the first British pilot to shoot down a German airship over Britain during the First World War.
For this he was awarded the Victoria Cross, making him the first person to be awarded the VC for action in the UK.

In April 1917, while flying a Bristol F.2 Fighter, he was shot down, wounded and captured by the Germans. He was not well treated by the Germans as he had shot down one of their war heros, he made several attempts to escape but all failed, and his health was badly affected during his time as a prisoner.

Also he was a member of 39 Squadron, the last Squadron of PR9 Canberra's I had the honour of serving on last year.

So this picture was very likely taken between 2nd April 1918 and 16th May 1918.

Stating the obvious I know but what the hey ! solthum

No aircraft in the picture - but a horse??? That looks real suspicious.
