Troops in Iraq are finding driving much easier following delivery of the first upgraded FV430 Mk3 Bulldog vehicles.

The delivery comes after successful trials in the UK and the Middle East confirmed that the Mk 3 vehicles are as reliable and robust as expected. The new engine and transmission give the vehicle improved performance and it is much easier to drive, resulting in less driver fatigue.

It is now fitted with additional armour and other improvements such as air conditioning. Bulldog can now also turn around within its own length which could be a life saver in a narrow street.

Over the next six months, more deliveries will be made to operations in Iraq as well as Afghanistan.

History of the FV430 series.
The FV432 is the armoured personnel carrier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armoured_personnel_carrier) variant of the British Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army)'s FV430 series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FV430_series) of armoured fighting vehicles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armoured_fighting_vehicle). Since its introduction in the 1960s it has been the most common variant used for transporting infantry on the battlefield. In the 1980s, almost 2,500 vehicles were in use, with around 1,500 still in operation - mostly in supporting arms rather than front-line infantry service.

Just shows what a good vehicle it was initially, if it can 'soldier on' for this long, admittedly with an extensive & costly refit.

I can remember there was a bit of an outcry when they were used in Desert Storm, some of them being pretty old. One assumes they made an effort to find those in best condition to be upgraded to Bulldog.
