Its last exercise as 4th Armoured Brigade was conducted under the name PRAIRIE EAGLE 2. This ambitious exercise was designed to test the Brigade to its limits and was a resounding success. The training areas in Poland gave three of the Battle Groups the chance to use new equipment and new tactics.
Originally formed in 1938 as part of the Mobile Division Eygpt, which changed its name to 7th Armoured Division, the Brigade soon began making history becoming the first Brigade across the Rhine in 1944 after the Normandy landings. Resurrected in Münster during 1981, after its disbandment in 1948, the Brigade deployed on Operation GRANBY in 1990/1991 and then moved to Osnabrück in 1991.
As it continues to re-equip and train itself for the mechanised role, the enduring symbol of the Brigade, The Black Rat, will continue to adorn the uniform of those who serve with 4th Mechanised Brigade.
