Back in WWII we all heared of the mighty carriers such as lexington,yorktown,enterprise and horent, but i would like to give thanks to the many Baby carriers of the NAVY They were much smaller than the fleet carriers as seen below.Relative carrier sizes
(typical examples)
Escort carrierFleet carrierLength:150 m260 mBeam:20 m28 mDisplacement:7500 t25,000 tAircraft:15 - 30over 80Speed:19 knots (35 km/h)33 knots (61 km/h)Crew:8503000
Still there purpose was nonethe less important, protecting convoys, finding enemy ships, aiding in invasions, and even bolstering the fleets carriers strength with their own planes. They usually carried around 20-30 planes and had the ability to take on numerous missions, hence the second name of "Jeep Carrier" after the famous do-anything anywhere army vehicle. Escort carriers played a big role in escorting convoy's in the north, kicking off thier ASW score with U-505's capture thanks to the USS Guadalcanal. In all 130 escort carriers were in service for the allied navies (USN and RN). Thanks to all u baby flattops for your contributionssal;

My Dad was on one in the Atlantic in the later part of the war. He was a China Fleet Sailor, USN 1937-57.
