I saw Clint Eastwood talking about this film on Sky TV and I told the wife I’d be going to see it when it came out.

I watch every war movie for entertainment only. The facts are very basic to keep the story in line. As Burt Lancaster said in the Crimson Pirate ‘Never believe what you hear and only believe half of what you see.’

For those of you that are expecting another Hollywood version of history, you will be disappointed. For those of you that are hoping for a movie that doesn't radically rewrite the book or events it is based on, you will be pleased

Then pleased I be matey, I will look forward to seeing this movie.
Thanks for your synopsis mate (Y)

Same here. Having read the book too, I am pleased to hear that the movie will be faithful to it.
I remember there was a movie made years ago, about the 3 surviving flag-raisers and how they coped afterwards. So sad about Ira Hayes, who took to drink. Can't remember what it was called, though.

For those of you that are expecting another Hollywood version of history, you will be disappointed. For those of you that are hoping for a movie that doesn't radically rewrite the book or events it is based on, you will be pleased. There are many of you, and I am in this group, that believe that "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" are two of the best attempts by Hollywood to portray the horrors and courage of soldiers in combat. I believe that "Flags of Our Fathers" will be added to this select list of movies that convey the bravery required by the average man to overcome his personal fears of his own death in order to achieve a higher objective and in the process, die if necessary for the man next to him. As the movie shows so eloquently, we survivors know who the real heros are. Semper Fi

Well, I went to see this movie today and in my humble opinion, it rightly deserves to be listed with those others mentioned by 03Fox2/1, above. It is a thought-provoking and emotional film and I admit there were tears in my eyes at some points, when very raw emotions were being portrayed.
These movies are setting the benchmark for future productions on similar subjects, where truth and authenticity is paramount, so that we appreciate and honour what those generations who experienced war have gone through.

I’m glad to see that the old boys are still honoured.

03Fox2/1, I understand your feeling and recognise what you are trying to say. But if we look at war and all its aftermaths, there is not one country in this world that has not done some great atrocities at one time or another.

England caused a lot of atrocities in Malaya and even executed some solders under the mutiny act because they refused to kill some innocent civilians because the local authority believed that they were communist. That is only one incident.

The Australians have not really apologies to the Aboriginals whose land it was in the first place.

America still treats the Native American Indians (NAI) as second class citizens and once again, the county is rightfully theirs. Even today there are laws that forbid the NAI for doing certain things

I could go on about other countries but I believe I’ve made my point. We should all clean up our own back yard before we start to complain about others.

Well said, Silky. And you're 100% right about America and NAI. It's not something to be proud of. We are as guilty as our politicians to let this continue. Now, to the point, I bought the DVD, "Flag of our fathers." It is one of the best and to-the-point movies I've seen and well worth seeing.
