Amazing not many people are responding to this thread. My G.G grand father was with the 101st Illinois, and saw action on the Mississippi river, even a small foot note on him. I think it was his brother, who was hung by the Yankees for being a bushwhacker. Lots of families were split.

My wife side, Her G. Grandfather enlisted in '61 to the 10th ALA. and was surrendered and paroled in Apr. '65. Sadly he was killed in a freak accident, around 1926. She had a Gr. Uncle who was Killed in the defense of Atlanta, I believe 5th Mississippi Cav..

I will study the war, off and on. When my son was born we decided to try re-enacting. Became involved with a Union unit. The Gentleman incharge was a vet for WWII.

I have done both sides, We have not done much in the last 6 years for other reasons. What I liked about it was the added dimension it added to the books on the war. How people lived, what they did, and how they amused themselves.

One of my favorite books of the time, was by Mr. William Pollard, "The Southerner's View of the War". He was the editor to the Richmond journal during the conflict.

Hollis, have you read 'The Killer Angels' by Michael Shaara?

It is an amazing mix of fiction and history about the Battle of Gettysburg and gives a tremendous insight into what that battle was like. It is one of the best books I have ever read.

Yes I had several years ago. It was a excellent read. I like Bruce Catton (SP) a lot too. He has a very way with him. I generally now read books of that era now when I do read on the war. I haven't read much on the CW the last few years. Sort of taking a break.
