View Full Version : Light Infantry arrives in Beirut

An initial detachment of soldiers from the 2nd Battalion the Light Infantry (2LI) have now arrived in Beirut to help with the assisted departure of British passport holders and other entitled people.

Two platoons from the Battalion left Episkopi Garrison, Cyprus, on Wednesday 19 July 2006, on RAF Chinook helicopters to form the lead company group of the spearhead land element of the assisted departures. They were accompanied by a number of Army Medics

They will help with the co-ordination and the organisation of the departures of British nationals wishing to leave Lebanon on the Royal Navy vessels currently providing a shuttle service between Beirut and Cyprus.

The Light Infantry recruit from Shropshire, Somerset, Cornwall, Yorkshire, County Durham and Tyne and Wear. 2nd Battalion the Light Infantry are currently based at Redford Infantry Barracks, Edinburgh.
