Operation Hydra was the designation of the bombardment of the army laboratory Peenemuende on Usedom in the night from 17 August on 18 August 1943 by the British RAF, which was covered by the operation Whitebait.

Actually the military operations already began at 10 August 1943 with actions of ten British fighters, which wanted to establish an attack pattern by attacks toward Berlin with air lanes near Peenemuende Berlin, in order to mask Luftwaffe the actual attack target Peenemuende.
For the reinforcement of this deception at the same time the operation Whitebait should take place with “Hydra”, which actually aimed at Berlin.
On 17 August 1943 full moon and Arthur Harris prevailed received instruction “Hydra” and “Whitebait” to accomplish. The entire British bomber fleet ascended; of it 597 airplanes were allotted to “Whitebait” and 571 to the “operation Hydra”.
The deception succeeded; when against 23:00 clock and the Baltic Sea flew over the bombers Denmark toward Berlin, about 200 German hunters tried to intercept these and about 150 concentrated thereby in the region Berlin.
Around 23:09 also the sirens in Peenemuende sounded to clock, but nobody counted on an attack. Against 01:09 then pathfinder airplanes their luminous marks set clock off around the army laboratory Peenemuende, eight minutes later (01: 17 o'clock) knocked the bombs of the first wave of “Hydra” (227 machines) directly into the living accommodations of the Wisssenschaftler into Karlshagen and killed there 123 persons; among them the scientists Dr. Thiel and Dr. Walther with their relatives. Who ago of brown could save itself into a shelter.
This was not coincidence to terminate but the attempt the rocket designs (among other things V 1 and V 2) by direct killing from scientists to. The victim number would have been still higher, but due to a marking error of the pathfinders a third of the machines of the first wave attacked the camp “route heath” and killed there 612 prisoners.
The second wave with 113 machines attacked the production plants into large resounding, the third wave with 180 machines the development work. Altogether 1,874 t blowing up and incendiary bombs were thrown off.
Only over 01:35 clock reached about 30 German night fighters the second wave and other flying back machines and could still 42 bombers shoot.

The British held long time for switched off for Peenemuende, but already it turned out few days after the attack that on an interruption from 4 weeks to was to be only counted, and the attempts continued soon. However now secondary writings of the documents and blueprints were made and paged out.
The shifting of the production of the V 2 was advanced into underground manufacturing plants (e.g. central tract Dora) and shot by the attack also at other places with rockets. SS-Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler could penetrate thereby now better into the rocket design, which he would completely actually have torn gladly.
