Hi everybody, I was a member of 27 Field Regiment Royal Artillery and first joined them in Topcliffe North Yorkshire after leaving RA Display Troop in Woolwhich, London. The reason I am posting this message is really to say how dissapointed I was when the Regiment was disbanded after our Regimental move to Dortmund,Germany. At the time I could not understand the reasoning behind it. After the disbandment I was posted to 12 Air Defence Regt RA just accross the road in Dortmund and although it was a fine Regiment I could not get into the roll of air defence after serving with Gun Regiments all my career.
Anyway was anybody else affected by similar seemingly stupid decisions made while serving with the Royal Regiment?.
I was in 47 FIELD and they didn't just disband it, no they gave us a fate worse than death- they turned it into a AD Regt!

My deepest sympathy Tosh66
I spent four years attached to 27 in Lippstadt 74/78. Had a ball, great guys and the live firing was a hoot. Especially when the bag charges were damp or wet. You had to be quick or you got an instant "Tan". :D

What Guns did they have then Tam ?
109 and 110 Howitzers. They had the Nuclear ability and were kept on their toes by the Yanks.
Should have also said they were self propelled. oops.

I know them well buddy. Used the M110 (8inch) when I was with 39 Heavy Regt and remember the NSI inspections well, :?
My only experience with M109's (155mm) was during the Gulf War (1) when I was with 23 bty (27 Field) but attached to 2nd Field Regt for the war. :)
Happy days... If I remember correctly just before I left 27 they were being issued with Simitars? Is that right?

Dont know about that mate, I joined them around about 1987-88 and they didnt have them then. they did have a couple of Spartans though in HQ Bty if I remember rightly. :)
Hmmm could have been them, I remember they came with aluminium fuel tanks that had defects.. more work for us poor sods.

I was with 56, 71 to 76. I had an Olympia typewriter that done more damage to those that upset me than all the 110s put together. 252s were a beautiful piece of paper - weren't they Frankie???

Is that the Rocky of "araldite and no parking tickets" fame. The same Rocky who knew exactly how many matches were in a box, but the SUS didn't and the same one who liked nice shiny fire buckets in the guardroom???????????????
