In August 1940 a type 300 Spitfire had a fuselage made from plastic, I think this was a trail in case there was a shortage of aluminium.

I have only found one reference to this at www.aeroflight.co.uk (http://www.aeroflight.co.uk)

Does any other member know of a link, picture or even better the serial number of the airframe.

Thanks solthum

Though the first true plastic was found in 1909 the plastics of the day were brittle and not well suited to stress. However there was still Perspex which was stronger but needed to be thick.

But I can believe that they would have experimented with plastics for lots of different usages

As for naughty IFB joke (Slappy wristy) about Airfix, they didn’t come onto the scene until 1950
