Two soldiers have been questioned by police over allegations that two girls aged 13 and 16 were raped in an Army barracks.
Police arrested the men, aged 19 and 21, this weekend and said inquiries were continuing into the alleged assaults.
The Ministry of Defence said that both suspects were serving with the 16th Royal Artillery regiment, based in Woolwich, south east London.
An MoD spokesman said: "Two soldiers from the 16th Royal Artillery regiment have been arrested and are assisting police with their inquiries."
He could not confirm if an internal investigation had taken place into the allegations.
It is believed that the officers were held overnight by police, before being released on bail to return to their barracks.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "We can confirm we are investigating a serious sexual assault on girls aged 16 and 13 in the Woolwich area.
"Two men aged 19 and 21 have been questioned and released on police bail, pending further inquiries."
She said the two men have been ordered to return to Plumstead police station on June 7.
