View Full Version : Incident at Sosa-Ri
When I arrived in Vietnam in late 1968, I was assigned to the 1st Marines, specifically, 2nd Battalion, Foxtrot company. Imagine my surprise and elation, because this was my Dad's old outfit in Korea. He was all of 21 years old and was a veteran of WW II, including Iwo Jima. He was the Platoon Sergeant and many years later he wrote his memoirs down, with the intent of someday having them published. Unfortunately, this never happened and my Dad passed away back in 1988. My sister has put together this piece, from my Dad's words and deeds, and I want to share it with any and all interested parties on this site, especially any Marine veterans of the Korean War.

"Private First Class Monegan's daring initiative, gallant fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty were contributing factors in the success of his company in repelling the enemy, and his self-sacrificing efforts throughout sustain and enhance the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."
A fantastic tribute, thanks 03Fox2/1 and please thank your sister for me. solthum sal;
I look forward to reading it through - have put it into favourites so I can access later tonite!
"On the road, the destroyed tanks continue to burn, red flames leaping all about, and small explosions occasionally rock the lifeless hulls, but the fury of the quick battle is behind us now. Monegan has given his own short life in trade for ours, and we stand in stunned silence trying to make sense of the gift we have received."
Very fitting and grateful words for a brave soldier, from a brave comrade and a writer with a talented style of prose. He takes us right there, into the thick of it. sal;
