I remember when I joined the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1983, there was a Drill Pig, Or Corporal/Bomabrdier for those that have never heard that phrase before.
His name was Pete Freack. I remember, I think, that this guy used to drill himself and his boots up and down the corridors in COLENSO Troop accomadation for reasons only known unto himself. The word was that he did so because he didnt feel that the finished product (bulling) was not good enough in his mind and he and his boots needed punishing in true military fashion.
Anyway, if anybody remembers somebody from their military service who was strange in this way or even remember Pete Freack, lets hear about it solthum
I had a drill Sgt drill; in baisc training who hated anyone taller than him and I mean hated, my life and a number of others in my intake, for those first weeks was hell. Being over 6' 3" I got the works. He would make me kneel down for any b*****king, this way we were eye to eye.

I am sorry Matzos, but that image must have been so comical for someone watching you two... I can well understand that it wasn't funny for you at the time though.
looking back on it AW it does seem funny, but at the time and only 17 years old, it made my blood run cold.

I think I have written about Corporal Merle Christensen elsewhere on the site but I’ll tell about him again here.
Corp, as we called him, was one strange troop. He was on his second tour with a rifle company in Vietnam when he was with us. For the most part he stayed to himself and only had a few of what you could call friends in our platoon. He was the team leader of the gun team so with them, he was the closest. He carried the skull of a small monkey with him and when we setup in our night defensive perimeter (NDP) he would find a stick and put the monkeys head on it in front of his fighting position (foxhole). It was also rumored that he carried a string of ears with him too but I’m pretty sure that was just talk for no one, to my knowledge, had ever seen them and knowing the strange dude that he was, that rumor could have very well been started by him in the first place.
He was a weird one but when the sh*t hit the fan, he was the type of solider who you were glad was next to you.
