Any online gamers able to give some advice?
I really enjoy games like Ghost Recon, Call of Duty, Brothers in Arms etc., but I'm a bit wary of trying them online. Mainly because I'm not sure how to go about it first of all, or confident that I would be good enough to compete in any game. Also, is my broadband connection of 1Mb is sufficient enough for online play?

Reloader, online multiplayer play is far more exciting than solo offline. You have to try it!
I would advise that you find a Clan server and play online with the same group of Clan members. They will be sympathetic to 'Noobies' as they are normally on the look out for prospective mebers anyway.
Keep away from public servers as they tend to attract all the cheaters, hackers and foul mouthed youngsters...(no offence to any younger players, but that sadly is the way it generally is)
I have found that games like Counter Strike:Source attract a large proportion of school going and college children whilst games like Ghost Recon attract a much older and more military orientated crowd.
Besides the law of averages will dictate that if you play long enough, there will always be somebody worse than you!
1mb connection is more than sufficient to play online. Probably more important is your graphics display, a decent mouse and good headphones (with a microphone).
If you ever want to try some online Ghost Recon, drop me a PM and I will forward you server details of a clan I play in. I have full server access and we can set up a few maps to run through and I will show you all the basics needed for multiplayer online play. (This obviously applies to any other MI.Net members as well!)
Bundu Basher, thanks for the info, maybe some day I'll give it a go!
I have earphones(not the best), but no microphone. You've got me thinking about my graphics card though, because a friend gave me a loan of 'Vietcong 2', which I installed on my PC. However, when I tried to boot up the game, I get an error message that my pixel and vertex shaders are not up-to-date (2.0 req'd). I have checked my drivers support online and believe my drivers are alright, but it just won't play! Every other game I have is fine.
PC technology is not my thing!

Reloader, You may have to add more memory to your PC. This always helps.

BB, let me in dude. This is something I've been wanting to do for ages. my first experiences in online warfare was with the older Delta Force PC games. That was an adrennaline rush I would like to re-experience.
