When I first saw 'Das Boot' when it was first released in US theaters, it was subtitled, & everything was spoken in German and I thought it was excellent. When I bought the VHS tape when it came out, it had been dubbed in English, which in this case, I thought really detracted from the realism of the film. From what I understand, this was originally a German TV series, but still, I think it is one of the best classic war films ever made.
Also, 'All Quiet On The Western Front' made in 1930 is one of my all time favorites. Even the remake with Richard Thomas is surprisingly good.
Absolute best propaganda film ever made, is 'Triumph Of The Will' by Leni Riefenstahl. So many of the images from this film are still used in documentaries today.
I have to say, as bad as most of the war movies made from 1941-45 were, I just love watching them. 'Wake Island', 'Guadalcanal Diary', 'Bataan', 'Sahara', 'Action In The North Atlantic', etc., are so one sided but are so much fun to watch. I can only imagine going to the movies as a kid during the war, and watching these old movies.
Absolute best weekly TV war series has to be 'COMBAT!' ... Vic Morrow is the only actor that could have portrayed Sgt. Saunders. The series was repeated on Encore several years ago, and I tried to tape all of them. No blood n guts, no profanity. And the first shows were actually drawn from the wartime experiences of the crew & actors.
I still love those oldys but goodies, COMBAT & 12 oclock High even Tour of Duty. 1200hrs High always bugged me when they used file footage of a Thunderbolts 50's firing (exact same shot), for all fighters firing German or otherwise.solaf. but still a good one.

A war movie I enjoy watching as a slightly different theatre of war, the movie ‘Enimy Mine’ with Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.
David Gerrold wrote the following about the movie: On a far distant planet, at the height of the war between the Dracon and Terran Empires, two military pilots crash in the heat of battle. One is Terran, (Dennis Quaid) one is Drac (Louse Gossett Jr). Each is a repulsive alien to the other. Each is a professional warrior, filled with hatred for his blood enemy. Now, marooned on a hostile world, they have a choice. They can complete their missions in a mutual pact of violence and death. Or they can do the most painful thing any Human or Drac has ever done: reach out and begin the new age of understanding that is struggling to be born.

Thanks for reminding me of this movie, I saw it after my tour in Rwanda and it reminded me of the friendship I formed with a Russian Colonel there on UN duty, as well. Every time we got into the vodka the very fact we'd only a short time ago (at that time) been enemies amused us greatly. Could never keep up with him, man they can drink.solaf
