I have a simple question that an raf wiz might be able to help me with........first, I know the Spitfire had a naval variant the SEAfire, but if im not mistaken the Hurricane was, for a short time, used as a catapult FW-200 condor interceptor on merchant ships and renamed the Hurricat.coast;

Your right mate the 'Hurricat' or 'Catafighters' were in the Mediterranean and Baltic. Later versions of the Sea Hurricane operated from aircraft carriers, being fitted usually with catapult spools and arrester hook, but by 1943 the Sea Hurricane had all but disappeared from service.

Thanks Bomb! I think a Seaplane variant of the hurricane would have been far more practical, but no where near as interesting

A work horse of the sky. Some people under-rated the Hurricane during the Battle of Britain. It did not have the flowing lines of the Spitfire, however, to me it was a great aircraft and was loved by it's pilots.

Yes..In fact I belive the Hurricane was the first RAF monoplane fighter. It served in the fighter,fighter-bomber(later models) and Close air support, as well as many other roles. With it's 8 browning .303's it made an ideal interceptor against the HE-111 bomber or FW-200 condor ( by the Hurricats). while it could turn tighter the Me/Bf-109E was better all-round in performance. But that didn't stop this bird from staying in service for the entire war and a short post war era....
