Just thought I would add something about publishing and copyright, because I noticed there had been a little confusion about what publishing something is.
I'm not an expert, but I've looked into this because I may write the story of my sorry life, plus some friends of mine are writing books/stories/poems too.
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the righ place, this kind of concerns "Your Story" and "Amusing Military Stories" too.
Perhaps this could be a sticky somewhere though?
Anyone with more/better knowledge in this subject please add to this thread.
Publishing is kind of complicated, but there are good literary agents out there who have websites filled with advice for newbie/wannabe writers... see the links below.
Publishing online and copyright: In short, if you’re planning on publishing your work as a book through a publisher, then you can’t put poems/book extracts online, which includes a forum like militaryimages.net (unless you have a deal with a publisher already).
At least you shouldn’t put any poems or book extracts online without password protection (there are website providers that offer that option, my website has that option, so I've got photos on there for example, but to access it people need to know the direct login weblink plus username and password, which only I can provide).
But if you’re distributing your work for anyone to see, then the creative commons license, in whatever format you choose, is probably the best option.
Posting anything online means sacrificing rights, but you are morally the owner of the work. It does no harm to be extra careful and mention “(c)2006 Your Name”.
Please be aware that you should never have to pay to have your book/poem published, that's why I added the 'vanity publishing' site: it explains it all.
