View Full Version : Saying goodbye

A Soldier standing tall and proud
In his immaculate uniform
Ready to embark on his journey
Off to a distant land to fight a war

He turns around to say goodbye
To his family and girlfriend
He feels awkward seeing his mothers unashamed tears
'Promise me, son, promise me to take care of yourself, promise me. Promise me!'

The father watches his son silently
Stretches out a hand for his eldest son to shake
Recognising the adrenalin flowing through his sons body
Just as it did in himself the first time he went off to war
God, protect him, he hasn't yet lived through the smell, the taste, the sound and feel of war

The Soldier turns nervously to his girlfriend
To his relief she isn't crying
He hugs her close, she smells so good, he wishes he could bottle her smell and bring it with him
Her heart is beating very fast, her smile is a little strained
But stoically she resists the tears welling up, saving them for later, when she's all alone

'Hey bro'! What about me?' the younger brother exclaims.
'Well, sport, you're so tiny I nearly forgot about you,' teases the Soldier
'Ha! I'll be taller than you when you get back, you'll see,' his brother replies
'Is that so? Well, I'd better remember to bring you back a souvenir then, hadn't I?'

The Soldier takes one last long look at his family and girlfriend
At all emotions, openly shown and not so well hidden
He feels guilty for not wanting to stay
'I'll be back before you know it.'

The Soldier turns away
He starts walking, feeling excited
Finally! A real war.
His adrenalin starts pumping. He can't wait.
His loved ones are already forgotten as he embarks on his journey to war
