I found this book in a charity shop for £1 and what a find it was! It tells the true story of Operation 'Jericho', which was the precision bombing raid against Amiens Prison on 18 February 1944. The raid was carried out by Mosquito bombers of 21, 464 & 487 Squadrons, with the intention of releasing as many as possible of the prison's inmates.
Without knowing it, Gestapo in that area had killed or captured most of the key members of Resistance networks who were vital for providing information and support for the forthcoming invasion on D-Day. Many of these were within days of execution & the raid was conceived by French resistance workers, who preferred the risk of escape or being killed by allied bombs, to being shot by the Nazis.
The raid was a great success, with about 700 prisoners escaping.
The book reveals the experiences of the pilots, the prisoners & those who assisted them. It reads more like a novel and is a real 'page-turner'.
