View Full Version : Older Program CD-Roms
A few years back, when I was just thinking about buying a PC, I spotted a boxed set of CD-Roms - 'Great Wars of the 20th Century', in a bargain book store for a few pounds. I bought them, looking forward to seeing them on my PC.
However, when I did get my 'Windows XP' PC, I realised these CD-Roms were for 'Windows 3.1 or Windows 95/98' & when I tried to install them, they wouldn't run. I've tried the Program Compatibility Wizard, which made no difference & the makers, Marshall Media, are no longer in business.
The box states there are over 5000 photographs, 1hr 40mins of film footage, over 250 maps & more than 12 hours of commentary on these CD-Roms. I'd love to see it and hopefully share some of it with you all, but it's frustrating knowing all that info is there & I can't get at it!
Anyone any ideas? :confused: :confused: :confused:
Install Windows 98. You can have 2 systems on computer

Another possibility mate would be to insert the disc and cancel the installation. Then explore the CD rom looking in all the folders if it will let you. You may be able to save all the photos to your hard drive and look at them from there.
Sometimes though the makers of the discs change the format of the images from jpg,gif to some unknown file type.
Its worth a try buddy. bou;
Thanks for the input guys. The Compatibility Wizard on my PC allows me to choose a previous Windows program to run the application on, but Windows 3.1 wasn't one of them & none of W95/98 or NT worked for any of it. When I explored the disk, I could open some of the files, mainly logos, ads, intro music etc., but none of the images would open. The images were listed as either Bitmap or .Gif, when I tried to open them, got the message 'preview not available'. Guess I'll just have to write it off. :o

Don't write it off, Reloader. Like Sierra Rangers say, "It ain't never over." Keep trying and also look around. Maybe you'll find someone who can help you.sal;
Thanks Eagle, I've already had an offer from someone else to try it - so watch this space!
that software is using older files that cannot be found anymore on the newer systems...
MS is always backward compatible... didn't they say that ????
movies etc... it all has to be on the CD, just to be picked off... but the install program has to be rewritten...
install win3.11 again... run it... see it...
Seems strange that they were written for Win 3.1. CDs were not generally available when that system was in vogue.
Your operating system may have the NFTS file system, which is unable to read FAT files.
If you have a floppy drive, download a Win 98 setup disk, and boot your computer using that. It has an option to start the computer with CD rom support. Once booted you can then read all the files on the CD.

Thanks again guys, but I'm a bit of a technophile, so I won't be footering (Scottish word) with my PC. What I did do, was copy the movies files from the CD's, which was what I was really interested in, then converted them to .AVI files. I used them for my 'Warrior Tribute' on YouTube.
You could email one or two of those image files to me or someone else in here, so we can try out. salute;

I've emailed the contents of one of the files to you, mineman.
