2 Royal Navy destroyers visit Port of Palma
TWO Royal Navy destroyers will be visiting the Port of Palma this month as part of operational deployments to the Mediterranean.
The Type-42 destroyer Manchester arrived in port yesterday with a NATO force which has been patrolling Mediterranean waters as part of the on-going war on terrorism. This force includes warships from most of the Mediterranean NATO members. The Manchester has a crew of more than 250 men and women and is equipped with the Sea Dart surface to air missile system, a Phalanx Rapid Firing anti-missile defence system and a Lynx helicopter. The Royal Navy has a warship permanently assigned to this NATO force. The crew of the Manchester will be looking forward to some rest and relaxation in Majorca which is still one of the most popular liberty ports in the Mediterranean for the Royal Navy. The second ship, is in fact a sister ship to the Manchester, the York which will be arriving in Palma after a long deployment to the Far East. There, she has been involved in a series of exercises with Britain's Far Eastern Allies, including Australia and New Zealand. During her stay in Palma a number of VIP events will be taking place including a reception aboard. The Type 42 forms the backbone of the Royal Navy's destroyer force and eight are in service.

I shall be heading off to the port tomorrow to see what I can see, photopgraph, and all being well, send in to the honoured members!

There is an American warship in port as well but, due to the "war on terrorism", the powers that be have put the ships onto the furthest wharf possible, making it very difficult for bods like me to get piccies. I will however keep trying!

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't been on for a while, been a bit busy.
Zofo, If the Force that are visiting you is the same as visited Portsmouth recently then the American ship could be the Mahan. Also if you get a chance to either visit the ship Manchester or talk to any crew members, could you ask if the Bus stop sign is still on the hanger please.
Regards
John B (Al)

Hi mate,
I too have been hideous busy and have not been able to get onto the site since my last post above.
The ships departed ages ago now of course but there was no chance to go on board any of them - nowadays one has to apply through the consulate IF they are accepting visitors. This time, as far as I know, they weren't. As for getting on a US vessel, well, not a sniff. Sorry 'bout that.
