An RAF winchman has been honoured for his attempts to save a family
swept into the North Sea by freak waves.
Nick Petch was on a Sea King helicopter called to Scarborough, North Yorkshire,
amid atrocious conditions on 13 March.
He has been awarded the Air Force Cross after being lowered into 60ft waves -
as high as the aircraft's rotor blades.
