View Full Version : Gun Tractors
Wotcher ,all
Having just completed a 1/35 model of a Russian 203mm Tracked
gun (howitzer?),I am looking for a suitable tractor .
I have been searching high and low for data that I have on these , but my old befuddled brain can't recollect which of my many books they are in .Serves me right for being greedy .
I know they used T34 and KV1 tanks as tractors --with turrets removed , and a weather cover--but without a picture , I am loath to spoil the gun's appearance by using a mediocre model of a tractor .
I have a similar problem with the Japanese model . It would have required a large tractor , something beyond a truck ,I suspect .I will come back to that one ,I haven't got the gun details to hand .
Can you help with the Russian one ? I have the T34 and KV1 ready to emasculate .

ps I am ex RAF .I do not make model planes .22+ years working on the sodding things was enough ,thanks .

It was necessary to create a heavy tractor with a tank engine for high power field howitzers (caliber 152-305mm), as well as medium and heavy tanks. The tractor demonstrated high results, it towed the largest artillery systems and all types of tanks, including T-35, very well. In 1939 the manufacturing of the 'Voroshilovets' tractors were started. During the war 'Voroshilovets' was efficiently used at all fronts for various transport works. Even Germans respectfully called the small number of captured tractors of this model 'Stalin – 607R'.
Hope this helps buddy ;)
Thanks for trying to help , fellas .
What I am after is details on the GunTractor made from turretless T34 tanks .
I have a photo of the thing somewhere , but have problems getting to it --I'm disabled .
I remember that it was apparently a T34 with turret removed , and a cover over the turret ring .There were no obvious modifications to the hull or fittings --at least that is what I remember .However , getting old and daft is another of my problems ,so I can't be sure .
I have made the 203mm Howitzer ,in 1/35 ,now I need something to pull it .
The KV1 was also used in the same way ,so I could also use that .

2000 models ?, you have been a busy lad :)
Hi mikanmart,
I think what you're looking for is in one of Matzos' galleries, in a pic next to a T-34:
http://www.militaryimages.net/photopost/data/501/t34.jpg
I think this was the armoured tractor used, but it's not a clear shot of it, so hopefully it will ring a bell with someone else, who may have a more complete image of it?

Thanks for the photo direction , the vehicle is , I believe ,an SU85 or SU 100 , which are both SPG's based on the T34 chassis .(Edited after finding next page , sod it ---yes , that is a T34 wrecker . Polish I believe .)
So , nice try , I do appreciate it , but the thing I am after is simply a T34 with the turret removed , no re-angling of armour , and very little else done to it . It is the "little else" that makes or breaks a model .
The same was done with the KV1 , info on that would do just as well , I have the chassis kits waiting for either , but need to know wheel type , top cover detail , and so on .
With regards to the 2000 models , I have been collecting since my posting to Hong Kong in 1955 . I have aircraft (yuk) ships ,tanks , trucks , trains ,cars ,
and no doubt some others up in the elastic sided loft that come in other categories . Oh , yes , and I make model soldiers . It's the only way to control them .

Why?
Why did I ever get involved with computers?
They are the bane of my life .I used to design the damn things .I should have known better .
So , I get to this forum , and someone kindly points me to photos . This is after not noticing that there were two pages ,remember? .Thick? Sad .
Then I can only get one photo to show .
This morning , I look again .Ah , try the second photo first .It worked .
So , what this photo shows are two ex self propelled guns , converted from T34 chassis ,converted again into recovery vehicles ,wreckers , whatever . Very interesting .
I wonder what else is hidden from me and my thick fingers on this site?
Nice pics , thanks ,
Mike M
