The current role of the armed forces in Northern Ireland is as follows:

To support the Police Service of Northern Ireland in the defeat of terrorism and the maintenance of Public Order in order to assist Her Majesty’s Government’s objective of returning Northern Ireland to normality..'

Northern Ireland is subdivided into two brigade areas, which exactly match the two Police Regions:

8 Infantry Brigade (Ballykelly)
The area of responsibility for 8 Infantry Brigade extends from the Glens of Antrim on the eastern seaboard via County Londonderry, the Fermanagh lakelands, the border area of south Armagh, into mid-Tyrone and Strangford Lough. This largely rural area corresponds to the PSNI’s Rural Region and includes Londonderry, the Province's second city. The Brigade Headquarters is at Shackleton Barracks, Ballykelly which is also home to the resident battalion.

39 Infantry Brigade (Belfast)
The remainder of the Province is the responsibility of 39 Infantry Brigade. It is the smallest in area, but remains the most heavily populated. The Brigade's area also has the Province's two main airports at Aldergrove and Belfast City, as well as the principal seaport of Belfast. The Brigade is also responsible for half of Lough Neagh, the largest body of inland water in the UK and corresponds to the PSNI’s Urban Region

Well I think the first thing to remember with regards to British Troops being present is that Northern Ireland is part of the UK and British troops have a right to be there, however when and if Northern Ireland is ever reunited in the fullest sense then im sure Troops will be pulled out.

Im not totally sure but I dont think that the troops do very much in the way of policing these days anyway.

Imperialistic the British?, surely not (Y)

do you think Ireland will ever be united?
No I don't think N.I. will ever be reunited, there are to many people
with vested interest in keeping things as they are, Most of the
Para military forces on both side's are only in conflict with each other
for control of contraband, extortion, racketeering and making
as much money as they can.
