All thru history, there are examples of the failure to capitalize on apparent victory, this is just another example of snatching near-defeat from the jaws of victory.

There was a communist quote that Stalin believed in, and I believe to be true, also. It went something like, "probe mush with a bayonnet until you meet steel." Meeting little or no resistance, Clark & Lucas seriously erred by consolidating their positions so early on, allowing the Germans the necessary time to build their strength & negate the value the Anzio landings should have had.
