On our final night prior to returning to our home port of Plymouth in March of 91 each mess onboard had a party planned. This is good old naval tradition. This was all the more important returning from 6 months of defences watches after our deployment in Gulf war 1.

With tradition we would of gone to anchor off Plymouth sound and dropped out of cruising watches to reduce the amount of personnel keeping watches and normally celebrate with a wet or ten.

But a certain 1st lieutenant decided we would remain in watches and go up and down all night long outside Plymouth sound to discourage the amount of parties and sailors with sore heads given there was a large press reception for the following morning being the first ship back after service in the conflict.

Well its one thing you don't do is piss of the boys !!!! So some parites still went ahead and two sailors decided to put a plan of action into force. The revenge type plan, no it wasn't me before you ask.

Now the said officer had bought a laser, very small one man sailing vessel for an extemely cheap price in Dubai

Now this particular laser had survived the Gulf War having been lashed to the upper deck for 2 months covered and protected only for the said sailors to launch it overboard without a bottle of champagne smashed against the hull and unbeknown to the said officer till the morning when he was doing his rounds on the upper deck !!!

The master at arms did his usual mustering the ships company onto the flight deck to read the riot act in the vain hope the culprits would come forward....in his dreams.

The said laser was picked up by the coast guard some 3 weeks later smashed and in much need of repair !!!!!

So the lesson to be learnt for those who have that kind of power who may read this and are still serving

DON'T PISS THE BOYS OR GIRLS OFF !!!!!!

I went to Plymouth to meet my brother coming back from the Adriatic on HMS Boxer in (prob) 1992/3. They were due to dock at 0900 and it must have been 0855 when the ship came round the headland and was moored bang on time. It was very, very impressive in terms of timing. It was quite exciting to see the vessel coming in with all the flags flying etc. We went on board and apart from the smell of polish etc there was quite a good strong mix of booze. My bro. told me that they had indeed moored outside the sound, went on an almighty bender and then been up since 0600 cleaning and tidying. We went down to his mess and started yet another piss up. In my humble opinion, the RN certainly managed the best piss ups and at the earliest times of the morning.
Keep 'em coming Fingers!
