Hi, People,
I saw a film many years ago about a German warship which hid in an atoll formed by an island. Somehow a guy armed with only a rifle climbed to the top of of a mountain on the island and delayed the ship from sailing, but I can't remember what the film is called.
Anybody help? ( This would have made a good quiz question).
Derrick.

Derrick, are you sure it was a German ship and not Japanese in the Pacific Theater? It sounds vaguely familiar.

Hi, Tom,
I just have this impression that the ship was a commerce raider, which as far as I know, the Japanese didn't particularly bother with except in the waters immediately round Japan/Australia.
I don't think it was even based on a true story, but I've somehow linked it in my mind with the Graf Spee.

Was this shot in the 50's - I remember seeing something like this with a star like Sinatra in the lead role?

Cheers Bill,
I can now do a bit of research and see if that's the film I'm thinking about.
Thanks Mate,
Derrick.

BILL,
I think you hit it. I was thinking of "No Man Is An Island," with Jeffrey Hunter. He seemed to be the actor that stood out in my mind.

Thanks Fella's,
It is indeed 'Sailor of the King' about a fictitious German ship called 'Essen'.
Michael Rennie was the star, and Geoffrey Hunter played the sailor with the rifle. It was made in 1953 - some memory Guys.
I can now stop fretting,
Thanks again,
Derrick.
