It is feared British soldiers have been injured in the Iraqi city of Basra, after militants launched attacks as night fell.
One or two soldiers might have been wounded in the southern town, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said.
Major Ian Clooney said Iraqi militia waited for nightfall before striking - but casualties could not be confirmed.
British troops have been battling Shia militia thought to be loyal to radical Iraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "Early reports suggest there may be one or two casualties."
