Just wondered if any of our Vietnam Veterans remembered these publications and could you shed any light on them such as their contents and what you thought of them?

I don't remember any of those books on Nam but we did have some orientation on the Vietnamese and their culture but I can't remember where that was. It was either at the 90th Replacement Bn. or Camp Ray which was the Screaming Eagle Replacement Training School, SERTS for short.
The Field Manual 21-13 sounds familiar though

Thanks Bill
U.S. Army manuals came in two types, the field manuals (FM) series that addressed military subjects and the technical manuals (TM) series that addressed repair and maintenance of specific equipment.
FM 21-13 The Soldiers Guide was all about the basic stuff soldiers needed to learn. The only other series I remember was 100-1 The Army, a source book for strategic doctrine, and FM 100-5 Operations the sourcebook for warfighting. There was even an FM that listd all of the FM's.
Tech manuals had a series of numbers starting with the first set that indicated the school or corps producing the manual, for instance TM 55-1520-10 would mean the book came from the Transportation Corps. The second number would be exclusive to the piece of equipment, in this case the UH-1 helicopter. The last part of the number indicated what level would use the manual, -10 would be the operators manual or pilots instruction book. A -20 series would be for the crewchief. The numbers then went up through successive levels of maintenance to -50, the depot book that would provide instruction for a complete teardown and rebuild.
And that's all I remember about that.

I, too, never received these booklets. Seems to me we were given some little cards with the P.O.W.'s "Code Of Conduct" on it [not very comforting to an FNG], and with some Vietnamese phrases: "Halt", "Drop your weapon", "Come here", etc.. They probably had more info, but I can't recall after all these years. Like Bill, we also had an orientation in P-Training about the Vietnamese and their customs.

You're right on with "Di Di Mau", Andy. I think "Halt" was "Dung Lai"; Come here" was "La Di". I don't recall any of the others anymore. Maybe later, if I think on it.
