Poland is marking the 60th anniversary of the failed Warsaw uprising against the Nazi occupation that left the city in ruins and some 200,000 Poles dead.
For the first time German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will attend the ceremonies.
During 63 days of fighting, the Soviet army on the outskirts of Warsaw held back, and the western allies are blamed for not giving more help to the city.
Polish PM Marek Belka said an allies' apology would be welcomed by Poland.
