A town centre came to a standstill after a digger on a construction site struck a wartime grenade, releasing phosphorous gas into the air.
Main roads in the centre of Poole, Dorset, were closed off by police after fumes started rising into the air.
The public were advised to stay away from the Hungerhill roundabout near the Dolphin Centre, as the emergency services examined the area.
A controlled explosion was carried out. Roads were later reopened at 1630 BST.
