Three North West army regiments are battling to stop them being amalgamated by the government.
Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon was expected to announce the merger of the Queen's Lancashire and King's regiments on Wednesday.
The decision is believed to be part of a package of defence cuts being announced in the House of Commons aimed at reforming infantry regiments.
A merger is likely to also include the King's Own Border Regiment.
Brigadier Geoff Sheldon, colonel of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, told the BBC an amalgamation of the three regiments into one would be disastrous.
