A Muslim reservist who went absent without leave when he thought he was being called up for the Iraq war has begun a legal battle against the RAF.
Leading Aircraftsman and medic Mohisin Khan, 25, from Ipswich, Suffolk, was punished by the RAF for going absent without leave (AWOL) last year.

He absented himself on the grounds of conscientious objection because it was against his religious beliefs.

He is challenging his conviction for being AWOL in the High Court.

Two High Court judges on Monday heard he was fined nine days' pay by the RAF.

The RAF's Summary Appeal Court upheld his conviction.

In 1961 my believes changed and became a conscientious objector. I requested to change from the RA to the RAMC, this was granted but I still went to dangerous places because it was my job to do so. I my military days he would have gone inside for 28 days or more. All I can say about this man is roc;

I can understand people being consciencious objectors, even those that are in the military to some degree if they are in jobs where they dont have to fight directly , such as medics clerks etc. What I cannot understand is somebody saying that they will not go to war because its against their beliefs. What did he expect to do once his expensive training was completed? Oregami?. needle work?

My unit had a "combat" medic who was a conscientious objector and all of us had nothing but the utmost respect for him. "Doc" Johnson would put himself between the enemy fire and the downed man and dodge a hail of bullets to do so. He went to war when his country called and it just proves that you didn't have to fight to be a hero in the eyes of the grunt. I often wondered if he was awarded the Combat Medic Badge.

In my generation, a consciencious objector was someone who refused to join the Armed Forces for whatever personal beliefs, and they normally faced at least a jail sentence.
Anyone who accepts the Queen's shilling, trains in peace time or whatever, then refuses to be placed in a combat zone for whatever reason, is at the minimum a coward.
As members of this Site have pointed out, objectors have served as non combatants in a variety of roles, often with heroic results. Those who accept wages and training in peacetime, then won't do the job when asked, are the lowest of the low.
N.B. How about making them stay in cleaning toilets, peeling taties, scrubbing floors, cleaning windows, etc, until they've paid back what it cost to train them?
Derrick.

Hey Bomb, Remember Victor Williams who went AWOL to avoid the first Gulf war?
He was in our gang (the shame of it all) and to top it off I think he was from Manchester as well.
I was at Woolwich when his Courts Martial was going on, whitewash from start to finish. Apparently it's still a capital offence to desert in the face of the enemy, ah but I dream!

That's the prat! I was on duty and had to go and pick up his diary for the court for evidence. I have never read such a fabrication in my life.
The fool appeared at anti war demos and made himself look like a tosser.

In 1961 my believes changed and became a conscientious objector.

i can handle that but he was a muslim when he joined, so if he though he might be going to fight fellow muslims why didn't he have a word with his C.O. after all when i was told i was going to N.I. i didn't run off (i'm a christian and both sides of the N.I conflict are christian).

the thing is muslim, christian, jew or even zen Buddhist a terrorist is a terrorist. and better off dispatched with extreme prejudice.

The Jocks have been fighting each other since Moses played for Motherwell.

I don't see how this prat can object to fighting on religious or racial grounds, you take the Queens shilling, you do the hard yards! I wonder what his reaction would be if a fellow muslim attacked him in England?

Pillock!

For him, religion is just a fall back into situation and excuse. I can’t talk about the reason for my changed in believes, because I signed that well-known piece of paper when I left the army. However, the branch I worked for at the time, now advertise for recruits on the Internet. I never thought I’d see that day. :( :( :( so sad
