As you know, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Oakland, to be exact. Oakland is directly across the bay from San Francisco, connected by the Bay Bridge. I can be in SF 10-45min., depending on traffic  . San Francisco is deemed one of the most beautiful cities of the world, and is visited by MILLIONS of tourists every year. I'm going to post some pictures of The City and some of the surrounding area and let you be the judge.

This is the skyline of downtown SF looking across the bay from the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge to the left is the Bay Bridge that connects SF and Oakland on the east side of the bay.

Speaking of my wife, this is Kath at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Seal Rocks and part of the Cliff House are in the background.

So where do you live? Let's see some pictures, boys and girls. Many of you live in some very exotic places to us Yanks.

Looking south down Ocean Beach, San Francisco, from the Cliff House. Spent alot of time on this beach as a teenager surfing, staying warm by a fire, and partying.

The Golden Gate Bridge spans the entrance to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. It's probably the most photographed bridge in the world. This was taken from the north end of the bridge, looking into The city.

This is looking across the bay from the Berkeley shore in the East Bay, out through the Golden Gate.

"The Lone Sailor" is a monument that stands at the Vista Point at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. It commemorates all of the Navy sailors, Coast Guardsmen, Marines, and Merchant Seamen that sailed out throught the Golden Gate in defense of their country.

Sometime I gotta get me a scanner.

This is the Puig Major, the highest of Mallorca's mountains at 1445 metres, about 2-300 feet higher than Ben Nevis! At the top is a spy station and you can perhaps make out the "golf balls". These were taken down last year and they are meant to be building a huge big new one. The base itself was built in the '50's by the US and handed back to the Spanish in 1988 I believe. The B52 bombers that flew over Mallorca during both Gulf wars picked up targeting, weather and navigational data from the Puig. There are also lots of other sneaky bits and pieces up here inc. a runway for the pilotless drones that carry the hellfire missiles. They can come in from the mainland in about 40 minutes.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-7/783369/XFRVF-PuigMajor.jpg

This is the village of Deia - where Robert Graves lived and worked. The building at the top is the church where Graves, who wrote I, Claudius and Goodbye To All That is buried. A bit further to the left of the pic the road carries on until the (hidden) turning where Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have a home.

GREAT PICS, PEOPLE! Keep'em coming.

Andy: What are the locks used for? They're too small to move boats on. Is that a swimmer or sun bather in the picture? I see the ladder, so I assume you can swim in it. The picture of the foot bridge on the quay is a great shot. Looks like an ideal place for a stroll.

Tosh: San Luis Obispo is a beautiful coastal town about 2hrs. away. Always have a bunk for you anytime you want to look up your cousin or myself.

Zofo: You lucky dog! A beautiful beach in your backyard! How tough is that?! A picture post card beautiful place. The picture of the village is how I picture all of Spain.

Derrick: I don't know that our beach is much warmer than yours. We're still far enough north to where our water is still pretty cold except on the nicest of days. The water starts getting more tolerable at about Santa Cruz, about 50mi. further south. The further south, the warmer the water. Where Tosh's cousin lives is very nice. Southern California is where all the famous warm movie beaches are. From SF, north is more rugged, colder coast. By-pass the scanner and get a digital camera, Bud. They're very reasonably priced if you shop around. Then you just download the pictures into the computer for posterity, printing, posting, saving to disc, etc..

You guys are right about the movies in San Francisco. There are several a year shot here, anywhere from a few scenes to full length movies. I don't remember what street the Bullit car chase was filmed on, but there are many here to choose from.

I'll post more from the area from time to time. Want MORE from the rest of you.

Yes Buddy boats did travel along the canals. The Canals in Britain were part of what we know as the Industrial revolution and were used to transport goods and raw materials around the country. Below is a picture of one such boat called 'Narrow Boats'
http://www.pendle.net/Salterforth/Pictures/Salterforth-NarrowBoat1-33p.jpg
I think that the person in the picture is just relaxing next to the canal, I dont think that is a ladder as although you could swim in the canals, it is not really encouraged so the local council would not place a ladder there.(not sure what it is though). Yes the Salford Quay area is now a very nice area and is constantly being developed, just behind the picture taker is Manchester Imperial War museum. The Quay area was once a very very busy dock where cargo ships would come in along the Manchester ship canal from the Liverpool area.

oops sorry nearly forgot the locks were used to overcome the differences in height as the canal made its way accross the country and would be flooded to raise the narrow boat to the higher level and emptied to lower it.

Thanks for the great info, Bomb. Are the boats still in use? They'd be great tourist attractions if converted to excursion boats. In Seattle, Washington, there are a series of locks near the downtown. They're on a bigger scale than yours. They bring large recreation boats and smaller commercial boats from Pugeot Sound, up to Lake Union and Lake Washington. Very interesting to watch.

San Francisco's counterpart to Manchester's Salford Quay is The Embarcadero. Like your's, it's been refurbished into a nice promenade area. Back in the day, it was all cargo ship handling and warehouses. Now it's excursion boats and where cruise ships dock when visiting SF. Oakland has become the freight shipping/receiving shipyard of the bay area. I'll get pictures.

Yes matey, although a lot of the canal ways are now derilict and overgrown we still have a lot of canal still in use. the boats are now mostly converted to leisure craft and good holidays are there for the taking. I have included a link to a canal boat holiday website, some good info about the boats and the holidays that are available

Now that looks like a cool way to see a piece of England. I would definately consider something like that if I were visiting. I like to do things off the beaten path. Who knows? I might come boating past your backyard someday, Andy coast; . If I ever do, I'll stop and let you buy a couple of pints or three at the Lass O Gowrie Pub dr; . Is this your favorite Manchester watering hole?

Here's a few more views for you.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v342/FriscoKid/tn_108_0847.jpg

This is the infamous Alcatraz Island, The Rock. In it's day it was the toughest prison in America, home to some of it's toughest criminals including Al Capone. It was taken out of the prison system in the early '60s. Now it's a state park, complete with rangers and guided tours. A highly recommended "must see" to any of you that comes to visit.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v342/FriscoKid/tn_108_0857.jpg

Here's the current home to some of the "hardest cases." This is San Quentin Prison. It is also home to California's Death Row, where inmates pending execution reside. It sits on a pretty little penninsula on the bay. There's always talk of shutting it down. It dates back to the Gold Rush days of the 1850s. Land developers would trample each other to death if this ever happened. It's some real prime real estate in an up-scale part of the state.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v342/FriscoKid/tn_108_0859.jpg

This is the rear gate to San Quentin where visitors enter to see inmates. To the left, not in the picture, is the prison gift shop where some of the talented inmates can sell there wares; paintings, carvings, tooled leather goods, etc., etc.. There is also a small museum just inside the gate in the building to the right. It's open at infrequent times. Best to call ahead, but worth seeing.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v342/FriscoKid/tn_108_0861.jpg

This is about as close as you want to get to the inside of San Quentin.

More hurricane Opal.

Opal was a category 3 hurricane that came ashore with 200 kilometer per hour sustained winds with gusts to 230 kilometers. Trees a meter in diameter were coming down and you could feel the ground shake when they fell. The storm surge cut completely through a 4 lane divided highway and left a channel about a hundred meters wide and 3 meters deep. We were without electricity and water for about five days. Not near as bad as it could have been, but bad enough.

Sosnowiec

Sosnowiec is a city located in the south of Poland
It is a county capital neighboring Katowice and one of the largest cities in the Śląskie Province. It has a population of 240.000 characterized by its dynamism, economic activity, and care for its cultural heritage and natural environment. In recent years, Sosnowiec has been transformed from and industrial center with mainly mining and heavy industries into a trade, service processing hub.

Its Special Economic Zone(SEZ), which was established in Sosnowiec thanks to the efforts of local authorities, has played a major role in the establishment of new businesses in the area. As a result, several companies with Polish and foreign capital have decided to place their businesses in the city. Companies operating on the local market have easily adopted their technologies to market requirements and global standards.

A large number of them have introduced quality assurance systems compatible with the international standards ISO 9000, while others have been awarded the ISO 14000 quality certificate. This year Sosnowiec City Office was awarded the ISO 9001 2001 quality certificate for its management system for providing services for the local community. Modern Image of a 100 - Year – old City

Sosnowiec does not just stand for industry, services and trade. It is an academic center with a well-developed research and educational infrastructure. The University of Silesia (schools of modern languages, natural science, technology and a language teacher training college), the Silesian Medical Academy, whose Faculty of Pharmacy is seated in Sosnowiec, and the private School of Marketing and Management operate in the City.

Moreover, the Silesian Technical University will soon open a campus in Sosnowiec.

The City`s image is changing each day, and Sosnowiec celebrated its 100th birthday with brand new décor. The downtown area was thoroughly rebuilt, which resulted in harmonizing its architectonic layout and gave the city a unique, modern image.

The main reason for the modernization was the creation of a 21st c. urban center.

This year, Sosnowiec authorities and designers were awarded the Grand Prix for the rebuilding of the downtown area in a competition for the best public space in the Śląskie Province.

This investment has been accompanied by a program designed to improve the esthetic qualities of the city, under which a comprehensive program for unifying the colors of the elevations, and advertisements entitled “rainbow city” has been introduced.
