British Armed Forces are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale by taking part in the National Bastille Day Parade in Paris for the first time.

The parade in the Champs Elysee commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 which started the French Revolution.

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon is being joined by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Sir Michael Walker, and the three Service Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Sir Alan West, General Sir Mike Jackson and Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup for the event.

The military units taking part are the Captain's Escort of the Household Cavalry, Guard from Queen's Company 1st Battalion Grenadier, the Royal Marines Band, and the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery. There is also to be a flypast by the Red Arrows, the Ministry of Defence said.

In April, the Queen kicked off a year of events to mark the anniversary of the Entente Cordiale when she visited Paris.

And last month Mr Hoon signed agreements with his French counterpart aimed at creating closer military planning between the two countries.

He went aboard the French aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, anchored off Gosport, Hampshire, to meet French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie as part of celebrations.

The Entente Cordiale was a colonial-era agreement signed by the British Foreign Secretary, Lord Lansdowne, and the French Ambassador, Paul Cambon, in London on April 8, 1904.

It had the aim of settling long-standing disputes between the UK and France in countries such as Morocco, Egypt, Siam, Madagascar, the New Hebrides, West and Central Africa and Newfoundland.

But it set the foundations for future diplomatic and military co-operation between the two countries which led to the alliance during the First World War.
