Charles Jenkins, an alleged US army deserter who has been living in North Korea since the 1960s, is to travel to Japan for medical treatment.
Mr Jenkins had previously refused to go to Japan, the home of his wife, fearing extradition to the US.

US ambassador Howard Baker said his government was "sympathetic" to Mr Jenkins' unspecified health problems.
However, the US has not explicitly said it will exempt him from extradition.
