My count came up with 685. Do any of you know if this is exact? I pretty much read every name. They deserve that. I noticed at least one woman, Cpl. Heather Kerrigan. Also, maybe Kgn [I don't know this rank] Eustace Hanley. I'm not sure of this soldiers sex, however. Did the women serve in the same capacity as the men [patrols, check points, etc.]? I was impressed with the number of Irish surnames amongst their ranks; just an observation. I also noticed many fallen Marines. How big of a presence did they have in NI? Did they pull the same type of duty?
MAY GOD KEEP THEM ALL CLOSE sal;
Ton
KGN (Kingsman) is a rank the same as Pfc , an honoury title for the Kings infantry regiment who incidently recruit from my area (greater Manchester and Liverpool)
Other abbrieviations just in case-
Gnr, Gunner
Spr, Sapper
Tpr, Trooper
Gdsmn, Guardsman
These are all Privates, and there are more as my colleagues will probably enlighten us.
Wow, guys. I'm impressed. Good job, y'all.
Only recently have the ladies been armed in any capacity, it took many years fighting to win.
When I left NI in '92 women were only used for one thing on patrols and that was searching females, that's it! Obviously there were women involved with the sneaky beaky stuff undercover, which I possibly cannot comment on but I'm sure they were very brave and did the job equally as well!
Marines do all the same duties as infantrymen with regard to tours etc, but I've worked with them and they certainly are mental! (They actually LIKE digging holes and filling sandbags!)

Thanks, Tosh. With Ms. Kerrigan possibly being the only female to be killed in NI, do you know the circumstances of her being KIA?
Jeez, Brit Marines sound like our Marines. Us Army guys would sometimes fondly refer to them as our dim-witted cousins :lol: . Oh, well. Gotta have 'em. Who would the sailors dance with aboard ship? lolb;
From what I can gather Ms Kerrigan was a member of the now defunct Ulster Defence Regiment who were part time soldiers who both lived and served in the province. They were recruited locally and had "proper" jobs and lived in the community. A dangerous life in anyone's books and their dedication was unsurpassed.

is a site that recognises the price paid by those who served in NI and also has Stephen's mother Rita as a member. It is a great site for those who suffered as a result of the conflict and has a good welfare section
And now with the latest problems that have been going on over in NI, with the IRA withdrawing from what they said thay would do with regards to their weapons, are we heading towards the dark days again, I hope not..
Just at PoltrHoon has decimated the infantry because NI has become a downgraded threat now...politicians...

Thanks for the info, Tam. Given Tosh's description of her unit, Heather was a very brave young lady.
So, was Eustace a male or female. If this sounds like a dumb question, I apologize. Here in the States I have never heard of a male named Eustace. We do have some women [older ones] named Eustice. If Kingsman Hanley was a man, was Cpl. Kerrigan the only woman killed in the line of duty in NI? As I scanned through the names, I didn't recognize any others that were of the fairer sex.
Hey Tom
The clue is in the rank, KingsMAN
I think we have explained elsewhere that up to the early 90s women generally were not put in the firing line apart from a brave unarmed few.
There were some armed ladies attached to scarey units with long hair! but that is probl another thread.
Tom, further to your last I have uncovered the following:-
Ulster Defence Regiment.
Pte Eva Martin. Killed 1974
L/Cpl Jean Leggett. Killed 1976
Margaret Hearst. Killed 1977.
Northern Ireland Prison Service.
Mrs A.J.Wallace. Killed 1979.
Miss E Chambers. Killed 1982.
Royal Ulster Constabulary.
WRC Mildren Harrison. Killed 1975.
Linda Bagley. Killed 1976.
Rosemary McGookin. Killed 1985.
Ivy Kelly. Killed 1985.
Tracy Doak. Killed 1985.
Colleen McMurray. Killed 1992.
As Tosh said Eustace was male.
If I can help with anything else, just call. Tam.

TOSH: Thanks for setting me straight, Bud. Good info, as always.
TAM: Thanks for researching the names of the fallen women. I'm glad you did it, and posted their names, so they can be remembered one more time. Like all fallen soldiers, they deserve to be remembered.
I thank all of you for helping me to understand this complex subject a little more, and for giving me a little insight into your roles there. I salute you all sal; .

I think these two women soldiers should also be included. They were considered by the IRA to be 'legitimate' targets because the pub, in Guildford, was known to be frequented by squaddies
Anne Hamilton Pte, WRAC. Age 19
Caroline Slater Pte WRAC. Age 18
Obviously many more were killed in this attack but these two seemed to stand out for the purposes of this thread.
l cant seem to find any mention on any Army Cadet Force Officers killed in N.I.l Can remember one such officer being killed by sniper fire,on the Falls Road during 1979.
