The dogs are used to sniff out drugs and any form of explosives contained in vehicles and homes. There are 10 dogs stationed in the Shaibah unit with specially trained Army personnel to handle the dogs.

Where is the info from? Ok, I'm being picky as a ex handler but if they look like they will attack you, they only have one role. The Sniffer Dogs are not trained to be scary and usually look cute and fluffy!

These dogs and trainers are fantastic! Great photos (not as good as yours Tosh!) I once met Max, a hunting dog who barked, snarled and wanted to bite anyone he saw. His handler was top notch tho' and kept him on a short leash. We did a demo of trying to run from the dog in all the padded kit and a Sqn. O.C., brought down by Max, tried to hit him. Max snapped at the suit padded officer yelped. the handler let Max snap away for two or three more bites before pulling him off. Don't hit my dog!! Much respect to the trainers/handlers and the dogs! I think the MOD Op. Telic site has some photos of the cuddly drug sniffers!

I have to agree with Tosh, having worked a lot with sniffer dogs whilst I was with HMC&E (1982-2000) most of ours were real cuddly pooches - Spaniels, Labs, German Pointers - not the kind that look like they want to tear your head off like these fellas.

The young lady in the first pic looks very friendly though - not so sure about here partner on the right! ;)

We used to do demos at the Maze when I was with the Guard Dog section, with the old padded suit and if the the "victim" felt safe and cocky we would set ALL the dogs on him! And let me tell you some of the dogs were psycho and were able to bite through the old, worn suit. I will see if I can rustle up some old photos of "baiting"

How many dogs did you have? That must have been some brainless "cocky" person - I saw the bite marks on several of the suited "victims" after they'd been brought down.

About twenty dogs, mostly German Shephards, two rottweillers and a doberman (which was useless due to lack of bodyweight)
The cocky gits usually had seen too many Rambo films on how to avoid and/or disable Guard Dogs. The poor suckers didn't stand a chance, as mentioned before if they tried to fight back we would just set all the dogs on them.

Me too! If the Doberman was too light, why was he there? Because he looked nasty?
