I would date both of these images around 1976 whe 56 Sqn. operated out of Akrotiri in Cyprus when we still had a decent precsence out there, and 23 Squadron was one of the QRA Squadrons at RAF Leuchers in Fife.

Interceptions of Soviet aircraft such as the Bear, Badger and Bison were everyday occurences in those days. I was lucky enough to be involved in a few such missions flying in the Shackleton AEW.2 Airborne Early Warning aircraft of 8 Sqn., from RAF Lossiemouth.

My wifes frist job in the RAF as a photographer was to photograph some damage in side the intake of the Lighting (RAF Binbrook 1978), they say that all you could see was a pair of legs sticking out of the intake. She got her picture, but no one got a picture of her (way before the time of digital cameras).
Then the next time she was on the wing of a 5 Sqn Lighting and fell off, she told me over the phone that she was ok, because she managed to pull one of the ground-crew (who was on the wing with her) off with her and land on him!
Now she is only 5' 1" tall, but she would walk towards the sqns with her camera in hand and the ground-crew would run.

No
she hang up her uniform 20 years ago and then followed me around the world
Even she says that the military is not the same as it was all them years ago, its getting too small and is run by people in suits sitting behind a desk in London.
I am lucky to have a wife who understands military life, she understands that if the phone goes at 3 am she knowns that I have to go.
