View Full Version : Okay, here's one for you...
I'm thinking of a rifle.
A British rifle that fired American ammunition.
It saw service in WW1
What is the rifle?

P-17 Enfield?
Good show, Rob!
The P-17 (or M1917) Enfield was being manufactured for Britian in several U.S. armories in .280 caliber. When the U.S. entered WW1 she found that she could not keep up with production demands for the U.S. M1903 Springfield rifles. It was found that conversion of the existing .280 rifles to US .30 caliber was not difficult, and manufacture could continue in the new caliber.
By the end of the war there were more 1917 Enfield rifles in service than M1903 Springfields!!

Steve - The original rifle was the P-13 in .276/.280 calibre - this actually answers a question of mine! However, the P-13 was never manufactured in any quantity, and actually it was the .303 version - the P-14 - which was in volume production during WW1.

As hinted above - this provides the final answer for my question on http://www.militaryimages.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=715#715
