View Full Version : Some info on the Falklands war, Please.
Re the Falklands, we Yanks are kinda where you Brits are with Vietnam...don't know a lot and would like to know more.
What started it?
What units & ships involved?
Noteworthy events of the conflict, etc.
Didn't this occur on PM Thatcher's watch?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Rigger dude. I never served in the Falkands Conflict,I joined the Army the following year. I would say that for some strange reason the Falklands actually spurred me on to join. My brother was there though and served as a Bombardier in I think 4th Field Regiment Royal Artillery, it was a very tense time for all my family and thankfully he returned safe and well. Incidentally my brother now lives accross the Pond with your good selves in Denver Colorado. I will try and get a hold of him and ask him to join.
Anyway to give you some idea of what the Falklands was all about I have added a link to a very informative site, it wont give you an angle on the soldiers side of the story but it will explain it history.

Yes we did polar which we fully expected to have. Some very important lessons were learnt by the British Military during this conflict. It was a very important conflict to the British and was an incredible job by Maragaret Thatcher, Ministry of Defence and more importantly the Soldiers ,Sailors and Airmen involved. army;
I have 3 interesting small film from this war, but they are in QT format and I can't upload it. On the first is argentinian Pucarra, second argentinian Mirage on third is british Rapier system. If you want send me yours e-mail adress on pm or e-mail
I thought the Brits did a fantastic job in this little fracas and was proud when I found out we helped in small ways, refueling in the air and so on.

Thanks rotorwash, Although I wasnt there my Brother was, he served with a 105mm Artillery unit. The Falklands appear to be an unimportant set of small Islands but never the less, they were British occupied by British and we were determined to have them remain British. I have tried to pursuade my Brother who now lives on your side of the pond in Denver, colorado to join us here and tell us about his time during the Falklands conflict, he hasnt yet but I ll keep working on him.
I have tried to hunt down movie clips about Falklands war, but haven't found anything good, only some small, short and without sound. If anyone has something more i would appreciate it.
Polar, how about those clips you have, are those OK ?
Sorry, films are short and without sound and quality isnt good :|
OK, thanks anyway. Perhaps there just isn't much video material.
Over the period of the war, the press were under a lot of control. During my searching of the RAF archives, I found very little imagery of the Falklands
There was a video issued by ITV in support of the South Atlantic Fund in 1982. It was very gung ho and pro war. The BBC followed suit and were more gory (guardsman being stretchered away missing a leg, stump waving in the air) and very much more realistic in terms of what war is. They are probably out of issue now - my copy is a old betamax though I think it was later upgraded somehow onto VHS.
You can "google" it to see if it's still about - I had a quick look but no joy.

Hi Rigger, I was briefed en route to the Falklands that this war was about oil!! yup u heard right, oil. There is apparantly the biggest reserves on earth, of the right grade down here. Besides that , we were the first to claim the islands although the french landed first(yeah I know!!). The only tentative claim the argies had was to their former spanish masters claim to the islands. Mixed signals were sent to argentina when we decommissioned HMS Endurance during defence "economies" in the 80's. The junta was in the **** at home and on a patriotic whim turned opinion at home by invading against 40 odd Marines - many were my mates, thankfully we suffered no losses. They were held at bay for 8 hours by some seasoned veterans, until the futility of fighting on was sensed. We landed some months later with poor equipment, big hearts and a typical British arrogance over anything foreign (left over from old colonial days)- as awful as that sounds it was this attitude and resolve that carried us on with our feet swollen and bleeding. Northern Ireland service prepared us well with fire discipline and tactics. anymore info required let me know
